| Recently
conducted studies reveal that only a small proportion of water samples tested were fit for
human consumption in bacteriological terms. Samples collected from Various parts of the
country were laced with all sorts of disease-causing organisms. Bacteriological
contamination occurs mainly through leaking sewerage lines, corroded water mains, the
dumping of untreated municipal waste near water sources and poor sanitary conditions. 80
per cent of the samples collected by various national and international agencies - and
sometimes even 100 per cent were found to be seriously contaminated. Source
